The heating season killer isn't the cold — it's the first week of cold, when every marginal part on every bus fails at once. This checklist is what to do in September, per bus, so October is boring.
Coolant loop
- Test freeze protection to at least -34°F; top up with the correct coolant, not water.
- Run every heater valve full travel — cables seize over summer. Free or replace now.
- Run the booster pump and confirm flow (both hoses hot), not just noise.
- Bleed all heater circuits at high points.
- Squeeze every heater hose at the clamps; replace soft or crusted ends. Check clamp torque.
Heaters and defrost
- Run every blower on every speed — front, defrost, underseat, rear. Listen for bearings.
- Confirm defrost airflow actually reaches the windshield with authority.
- Vacuum out defroster and underseat intakes (paper, leaves, nests).
- Check underseat heater guards and grilles — kicked-in grilles chew wheels.
Fuel-fired heaters (Webasto/Espar)
- Start it in September, not November. Let it complete a full cycle.
- Do the annual service kit (glow pin/plug, screens, gaskets) on schedule — most "dead heater" calls in January are skipped September service.
- Confirm winter fuel treatment plan; summer diesel gels in the heater's fuel line first.
Electrical
- Load-test batteries — winter heaters and blowers are the biggest parasitic load of the year.
- Voltage-drop the blower and booster pump circuits; corroded grounds kill motors mid-season.
