Bus heat is plumbing. One loop leaves the engine, feeds several heaters in series or parallel, and comes back. When a heater blows cold, the question is always the same: is coolant reaching that core hot, and is it flowing? Work it like this.
1. Is the whole bus cold, or one unit?
Whole bus cold with a warm engine = supply-side problem: main shut-off valve closed, booster pump dead, airlock at the loop's high point, or low coolant. One cold unit with others hot = that unit's valve, core, or airlock.
2. Check coolant level and the engine's own temperature first
A thermostat stuck open keeps the whole loop lukewarm — no heater downstream can fix an engine that never reaches temp. If the temp gauge runs low, fix the engine thermostat before touching the heaters.
3. Feel both hoses at the cold heater
Two hot hoses, cold air: airflow problem — blower motor, wheel slipped on shaft, or plugged core fins.
One hot, one lukewarm: coolant enters and dies — plugged core. Flush or replace.
Two cold hoses: no flow — closed valve, collapsed hose, airlock, or the booster pump if this unit is far from the engine.
4. Suspect the booster pump for rear units
"Front heat fine, rear cold" is the booster pump's signature. Confirm it runs (listen), then confirm it moves (both hoses hot). Stripped impellers hum convincingly while pumping nothing.
5. Bleed the loop
After any coolant work, bus loops trap air at rooftop defrost runs and high underseat crossovers. Run the engine at fast idle, heat full on, all valves open, and bleed at the highest points until flow is solid. Some buses need the nose raised. An airlocked loop mimics every other failure on this list.

Why is the back of my bus cold but the front warm?
Booster pump nine times out of ten. Rear heaters sit at the end of a long run; without the booster pushing, they get flow only at highway RPM, if at all.
The heater worked until I replaced the coolant. Now it's cold.
Airlock. Bleed the loop at its high points with the heat valves open and the engine at fast idle. Buses do not self-purge the way cars do — the runs are too long and too flat.
How do I flush a plugged bus heater core?
Isolate the core, backflush with water opposite the normal flow direction, then forward-flush until clear. If flow doesn't recover, the core is scaled internally — replace it. Chronic plugging across multiple cores means the loop needs a real coolant service, not more flushes.
