A dead defroster fails pre-trip and parks the bus, so this is the heating repair with a deadline. The defrost unit is just a dedicated heater core with a high-speed blower aimed at the windshield — which means it fails in exactly three ways.
1. No air: blower circuit
Check the fuse and switch, then the motor. Defrost motors run harder and longer than any other motor on the bus; brushes wear out first. If the motor runs but airflow is weak, pull the wheel and look at the duct — pre-winter, ducts are routinely packed with paper, leaves, and the occasional mouse nest.
2. Air but no heat: coolant side
Same triage as any core — feel both hoses. Two cold = the defrost feed valve or an airlock (defrost cores often sit at the loop's highest point, making them the first thing to airlock). One hot, one cool = plugged core.
3. Heat but fogging anyway: airflow direction and volume
Collapsed or disconnected duct, missing nozzle, or a wheel installed backwards after a motor swap. Confirm strong airflow at the windshield outlets, not just at the unit.

Does a school bus defroster have to work to pass inspection?
Yes. FMVSS 103 requires windshield defrosting/defogging, and state pre-trip and inspection rules treat it as an out-of-service item in winter conditions. It's not optional equipment.
My defroster blows cold only on the coldest mornings.
Marginal flow — a partially closed valve, partial airlock, or scaling core that keeps up in mild weather but can't at -10°F. Fix the flow now; it always fails completely on the worst morning of the year.
